Religiöser Dissens und die Bildung getrennter Gemeinschaften

Dieser Artikel untersucht aus einer historisch-dokumentarischen Perspektive die Herausbildung der englischen baptistischen Tradition (ca. 1580–1646/47). Es wird der rechtlich-kirchliche Rahmen des Separatismus (Suprematsakte und Uniformitätsakte, Kategorie der Recusants) rekonstruiert, wobei grundlegende Akteure und Texte (Browne, Barrowe, Smyth und Helwys) beschrieben werden. Das Hauptcorpus umfasst die Declaration of Faith (1611) und das Erste Londoner Bekenntnis (First London Confession, 1644/1646), die Artikel für Artikel analysiert werden, sowie eine vollständige Untersuchung von A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity (1612). Der abschließende Teil vergleicht die baptistischen Bekenntnisse mit dem Bekenntnis von Westminster (1646/1647) und dem Dordrechter Bekenntnis (1632). Methodisch werden externe und interne Quellenkritik, die Kollation von Ausgaben und Varianten, die Ideengeschichte (Cambridge School) und der synoptische Vergleich kombiniert. Die Ergebnisse heben hervor: (i) die Definition interner Grenzen (General Baptists vs. Particular Baptists, mit Schwerpunkt auf der Reichweite der Sühne); (ii) die kongregationalistische ekklesiologische Gestaltung (Gläubigenkirche, Bund, Disziplin, Verordnungen) und deren öffentliche Auswirkungen; und (iii) den Beitrag der frühen baptistischen Quellen zur Geschichte der Gewissensfreiheit und der Verhältnisse zwischen Kirche und Staat. Schließlich bietet der Artikel einen technischen Apparat (kommentierte Übersetzung zentraler Abschnitte, Referenzen und Quellenhinweise), der neue dokumentarische Analysen ermöglicht.
