Abstract

In the history of (world) religions water is used as a sign or symbol in many ways; a special meaning is giving or taking life. That can be found in religions related to desert and oasis like Judaism and Islam. The lore of the deluge shows how god is using the destructive power of water, which can lead to the question of theodizee. Concerning different independent religions also the meaning of giving Eternal Life is found in Christianity (baptism) as well as in Hinduism (the life giving Ganga river).
