An unpublished autograph manuscript by Thomas Boys in the National Library of Portugal

Abstract

This article presents a recently discovered, unpublished autograph manuscript by Thomas Boys, an author who is still little known to the general public. It is a recent acquisition by the National Library of Portugal (Lisbon). The manuscript consists of a printed text of the translation by João Ferreira de Almeida, minister and preacher of the Holy Gospel in Batavia, in the London edition, 1819, In-4º format, from the workshop of R. and A. Taylor, which was cut out, pasted onto larger folios, and extensively annotated or rewritten by hand by Reverend Thomas Boys. The material, which covers the Old and New Testaments, is part of the manuscript collection of the National Library of Portugal, under the call numbers In-4º COD. 13546, COD. 13547, and COD. 13548. This study focuses on the general aspects of the autograph manuscript, with an emphasis on the New Testament, and investigates its authorship, placing it in a context of continuous intellectual production rather than an isolated undertaking. The aim is to give visibility to this material, encouraging future academic studies.
