Call for Thematic Dossier: Theology and Education – Historical and Contemporary Intersections

24-02-2026

In the early 2000s, FLT, located in São Bento do Sul (SC), obtained official recognition of its Bachelor’s Degree in Theology through Ministry of Education Ordinance No. 1,915, dated August 22, 2001. This act marked the institution’s transition from a primarily ministerial and confessional training center to full integration within the Brazilian national academic system, granting full legal validity to its diplomas and constituting a milestone in theological education in Brazil. Later, in 2014, institutional reaccreditation consolidated FLT’s position as a higher education institution within the Brazilian educational system.

This historical process not only legitimized Theology as a field of study recognized by the State but also reaffirmed the relevance of the Lutheran tradition in the country’s academic and cultural formation. Accreditation signified that Theology ceased to be viewed merely as an internal discipline of churches and began to occupy a place within scientific and educational dialogue.

The impact of this recognition is twofold: on the one hand, it strengthens FLT’s credibility and opens opportunities for its graduates in academic and social careers; on the other, it symbolizes the integration of faith and theological reflection into the Brazilian university context, demonstrating that Theology can contribute critically and ethically to society.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the accreditation of the Bachelor’s Degree in Theology in 2026, we invite researchers and scholars to submit articles for a thematic dossier exploring the intersection between Theology and Education, with particular attention to historical and contemporary themes related to Lutheranism, Pietism, and their influence on Christian educational institutions.

Lutheranism and Pietism have significantly shaped Theology and Education over the centuries, especially in contexts such as the Rede Sinodal de Ensino in Brazil. This dossier seeks contributions addressing these movements in their historical, theological, and educational dimensions, including:

  • The influence of Martin Luther on Education
  • Halle and its global educational legacy – key theorists
  • Pietism and spiritual and educational formation
  • Theological education in the Lutheran context
  • The Rede Sinodal de Ensino: history, challenges, and perspectives
  • Dialogues between Theology and Pedagogy
  • Theological formation in the Latin American context
  • Educational practices in confessional settings
